Seoul: The Heart of South Korea
Seoul, the capital city, seamlessly combines the old with the new. The city is home to numerous historical sites, such as the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace. Built in 1395, this grand palace served as the main royal residence during the Joseon Dynasty. Here, you can watch the changing of the guard ceremony and explore the beautiful gardens. Bukchon Hanok Village showcases traditional Korean architecture. Strolling through its narrow streets, you'll find Hanoks (traditional Korean houses), tea houses and craft shops.
For a taste of contemporary Korea, head to the districts of Gangnam and Myeongdong. Gangnam is famous for its quality shopping, chic cafes, vibrant nightlife and yes that song too! Myeongdong, on the other hand, is a haven for beauty enthusiasts, with countless cosmetic shops and street food vendors. Take a stroll along the Cheonggyecheon Stream, an urban renewal project that transformed a highway into a peaceful, green haven in the heart of the city. Alternatively head for the Namsan Seoul Tower reaching 480m above sea level and dine in the revolving restaurant as it slowly rotates, giving you fabulous views over the city.
Jeju Island:
Jeju Island, in the south of the country is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and natural paradise. Formed by an eruption about 2 million years ago, this volcanic island is renowned for its stunning beaches, lush forests and unique geology. Hallasan Mountain has the highest peak in South Korea. Hiking to the summit offers breathtaking views of the island and its surroundings. Another beautiful spot is the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, also known as Sunrise Peak, due to the breathtaking sunrises you can enjoy. Walk through Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the longest lava tunnels in the world or relax on the sandy shores of Hyeopjae Beach. Jeju’s unique culture is also on display at the Jeju Folk Village, where you can learn about the island’s traditional way of life. The island is also dotted with beautiful waterfalls, such as Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang, which provide a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle.
Busan:
Busan, South Korea's second-largest city, offers a mix of stunning beaches, vibrant markets and cultural landmarks. Haeundae Beach is one of the most popular spots, perfect for sunbathing, swimming and the annual sand festival. The Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea provides stunning ocean views. Visit the bustling Jagalchi Fish Market, where you can try fresh seafood or Gamcheon Culture Village, often called the "Machu Picchu of Busan,". A colourful hillside community filled with art, murals and quaint cafes offering a unique cultural experience.
Cuisine :
No visit to South Korea would be complete without trying some of its wonderful cuisine. Known for its bold flavours, try some kimchi, a fermented vegetable dish that is a staple in Korean meals. Other dishes include bulgogi (marinated beef), bibimbap (mixed rice with vegetables and meat), and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes).
South Korea is a destination that promises rich cultural experiences, stunning landscapes and delectable cuisine. Whether you're exploring the vibrant streets of Seoul, hiking the trails of Jeju Island, immersing yourself in the country's historical sites or soaking up the coastal charm of Busan, South Korea offers something for everyone.
